Late 19th century English askos
An English c.1870 askos glass serving vessel with plated metal mount showing a hippocampus and a handle of twisted grapevines. The glass body is frosted. At the time it was made this vessel was probably intended to be used for serving wine but the design dates back to Ancient Greek times when the askos was a vessel for serving oil. It is not common to find an example made of glass.
